Should You Factor Private School Tuition Into Your South Charlotte Home Budget?
South Charlotte is home to some of the best private schools in the Carolinas. Charlotte Latin, Providence Day, Charlotte Country Day. These schools are part of why families move here.
They're also a significant budget line item that can change which home price actually makes sense for you.
Here's what tuition looks like right now.
Charlotte Latin School on Providence Road runs $23,750-$32,900 per year depending on grade level, based on their current 2026-27 published rates. Providence Day School is in a similar range. Charlotte Country Day is comparable.
If you have two kids in private school, you're looking at $47,000-$65,000 per year in tuition. That's on top of your mortgage, property taxes, HOA, and everything else.
Here's why this matters for your home search specifically.
MLS data shows Ballantyne single-family homes averaging $726,000 most recently, and Cotswold averaging well over $1,000,000. If you're buying at either of those price points and also planning for private school, those two numbers have to be looked at together.
A buyer who can technically qualify for a $900,000 home might be in a much better financial position at $700,000 if they're also carrying $55,000 in annual tuition. That breathing room matters every single month.
The good news: South Charlotte's public school options are genuinely strong. Several Ballantyne-area schools consistently rank at the top of Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools. Private school is a choice here, not a necessity. Worth knowing when you're building your budget.
